A Cure for Wellness Torrent: Which moment pretty early in Gore Verbinski's A Treatment for Wellness when it seems the movie will end with some kind of twist. I'd normally refrain from offering that kind of information in a review, but the film itself doesn't seem to be concerned with hiding the idea. In fact, it does the contrary: minutes after encouraging the audience's some doubts by showing off a quickly unexplained mystery, Jason Isaacs -- playing the enigmatic head of a mystical sanitarium in the Deluxe Alps -- practically quivers while fawning over old fashioned locket that belonged to one of the property's original owners. It's the movie equivalent of those light-up wands used to direct landing airplanes: Hi there, pay attention to this detail! It's going to pay off later, you will see!

It's annoying, because A Cure for Wellness is a wonderfully shot film packed with interesting ideas, but it dumbs itself down each and every possible turn. A psychological thriller about an up-and-coming Wall Street business (Dane DeHaan) who questions his sanity while captured in that mysterious sanitarium, A Cure for Well being is fascinated by the destructive nature of the American work ethics, and how its idolatry leaves us susceptible to gaslighting and much, far even worse. But while Verbinski (director of The Ring, The Lone Ranger, and the first three Pirates From the Caribbean movies) expertly projects an atmosphere of ever-deepening paranoia, the film does indeed not work out to hold on to it is larger aspirations. He seems so concerned that the audience won't hook up the dots that he collapses the film into a wreckage of blockbuster exhibitions that likely won't gratify anyone.

DeHaan plays Lockhart, a workaholic Wall Streeter (are there some other kind in movies? ) whose bosses catch him pulling some ethical sleight-of-hand. The end of his career is all but assured -- unless he is willing to move to a remote wellness spa in Switzerland and get the company's CEO, who seems to have lost his mind and neglects to leave. Lockhart happily takes the assignment and travels to the mystical center, which is allegedly built after a natural aquifer which gives the water healing properties.
